An historic and interesting town, the Alton district was inhabited even in prehistoric times and Roman Legions Marched the main road after crossing the Wey by the ford. King Edward II, in 1307, presented the town with a charter giving it the right to hold an annual fair and the market town prospered. Scene of a firce battle in the civil war between the Roundheads and Cavaliers in 1643 St. Lawrence church still bears the battle scars. In 1867 a Soliciters Clerk, Frederick Baker, brutally murdered Fanny Adams. Parts of her body were taken to a local public house and the expression, 'Sweet FA' was born. Old houses abound in the narrow streets with Georgian buildings mingling harmoniously with later architectural styles. Surrounding villages are also of interest, especially Chawton where Jane Austin lived and Selbourne, long the home of the Glbert White the naturalist. Our guests include many people of sense and sensibility - that is to say, devotees of Jane Austen, who make their pilgrimage to her cottage in the Chawton area of Alton during their stay with us. The cottage now is a popular tourist attraction and museum dedicated to Jane's life and work. Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice were written here. But you don't have to be a fan of Jane Austen to enjoy the pretty village of Chawton or the attractions of the Swan Hotel. The hotel, dating back to 1554, has an intimate restaurant serving a varied menu of well cooked dishes. It also has a reasonably priced wine list. The bar and lounge are rich in character, with open fireplaces, and filling bar meals and real ales. What's so special about us? There are 36 en-suite bedrooms, including one with a romantic four-poster bed. Two fully equipped function rooms are available. The garden, pond and attractive landscaped courtyard are a delightful backdrop to the rear of the hotel, providing the perfect environment for business and pleasure. The excellent accommodation consists of 125 bedrooms tastefully refurbished to the highest standards incorporating mini bar, hospitality tray, writing desk, 2 telephones with Ddi lines, modem point, interactive TVs with interactive Express Checkout movies and play station games. A glorious view created by nature, ambience created by the Master Builders House Hotel. Refined yet informal - the Riverview Restaurant and Terrace overlook the Beaulieu River. Chef Denis Rhoden provides a menu which is Modern European in style and flavour. The menus change regularly and are seasonal. Relax in restful surroundings watching the boats go by. Robin and his family, as with his parents Beryl and Brian previously, have been leading people to this delectable part of the country for more than 40 years. As you drive through the ancient New Forest, and up the long sweeping drive to the hotel, shadowed by Canadian redwood and copper beech trees and lined with rhododendrons, your anticipation builds. Your breath will be taken away by this magnificent, country mansion surrounded by natural forest. Rhinefield House is home to a number of hidden treasures. The Alhambra Room, originally built as a gentlemans smoking room by the owner Mabel Walker-Munro as a birthday gift for her husband, is now an elaborate private dining room. Designed as an exact replica of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, it is elaborately embellished with onyx from Persia, magnificent copper and bronze, and hand-cut mosaic tiles. Attention to detail also prevails in the restaurant where you will find the magnificent carving of the Armada set in the restaurant fireplace. This took nine years to complete and was carved out of one solid block of oak some 4ft thick. It provides the perfect backdrop to the masterpieces created by Chef and his team who delight in choosing only the finest ingredients to provide mouth-watering food complemented by a wide selection of fine wines.

Throughout its long history, Burley Manor has enjoyed many regal connections. Parts of the estate were probably laid out in Saxon times and must have existed before the Doomsday Book was compiled in 1086. Later, for nearly 200 years, Burley was a Royal Manor. The current building was erected in 1852, but it was a further 80 years before the house became a hotel, when a restaurant and bedroom wing were added. During World War Two, the hotel was requisitioned and used as a military headquarters by Lord Montgomery and his chiefs of staff. Over the past 25 years the baronial-style hotel has been continually upgraded and refurbished, the most recent additions being a brand new wing of luxurious premier rooms and a conservatory extension to the restaurant. Burley has 38 spacious and elegant en-suite bedrooms, including some with four-poster beds. All are fully equipped with electric trouser press, hair dryer, colour television and tea and coffee-making facilities. The Raven has recently been refurbished. It offers a modern eating environment and entertainment venue. The Best Western Innlodge complex includes one of England's finest pubs, with a poolroom, a large garden and a dedicated Action Zone children's supervised activity center. Our team of chefs have gained recognition from the AA and Good Food Guide. Bertie's specialises in traditional British fayre but our chefs have blended culinary nostalgia with modern flair and created a very different menu. The menu may feature 'Homemade fishcakes with a tomato herb sauce' alongside 'Brochettes of monkfish with a lemon and chervil dressing' or perhaps 'pork and herb sausages on a bed of mustard mash' alongside 'Roasted rack of lamb with figs and a sauce of ginger'. The hotel also houses two meeting rooms. Both have natural daylight and air conditioning. A single price includes day hire, and includes all equipment and refreshment in the room. The airy, glass and timber walkway, an image reinforced by the sightings of animals in the adjacent zoological park. The colonial influence is apparent too in the cane bedroom furniture, but thankfully mosquito nets are not required.

The bedrooms are located in either the main house or the west wing. The main house rooms all have their own individual character. The executive rooms are in the west wing and all overlook the beautiful walled gardens. The Conservatory restaurantserves quality A La Carte and Table D' Hote menus at lunch & dinner in the air conditioned restaurant. The hotel also has 2 small car parks for approximately 50 cars.

The house is a charming home from home in which to unwind, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere created by the friendly and long-serving staff. The Drawing Room and Cedar Bar have enchanting views along Lainston's spectacular avenue of Limes. This is the perfect place to enjoy afternoon tea or a pre-dinner cocktail. The elegant Avenue Restaurant, which overlooks the gardens, offers an imaginative selection of dishes, complemented by an extensive range of fine wines. The bedrooms and suites are all individually decorated, reflecting the period of the house.
