Built on 3 acres of common land known as Handville Green in 1796 for the poor people of the parish. The building remained as a poorhouse until 1828 when it transferred to private ownership. At this point the outhouses were converted into cottages, one of these being used as a bakery and another as a beer shop. One part of what is now the restaurant was used as a chapel by the Wesleyan Methodists. Named as Waltham Court in 1909 the house remained as a private residence, surviving the 2nd World War when it was taken over by the army and the garden turned into a potato field in 1985 it opened as a restaurant with rooms. Upper Ansdore was probably a first floor hall house dating from the late medieval period circa 1380. In rural areas this form of house was favoured for defence purposes. Generally they are not large. The ground floor was probably used as store rooms or as a subsiduary living accommodation. Above the first floor is a hall of two bays originally open to the roof with a single bay solar adjoining which was always ceiled providing an attic. Two hundred years later in the 16th century a chimney was built in what was called the screens passage. This chimney built of tudor bricks is large on todays standard but it allowed two fireplaces on the first floor, and two on the ground floor so that all rooms could be heated. Also note the bread oven to the side of the fireplace. One fireplace has stone supporting pillars with an oak lintel which is moulded in the Tudor Arch or the Four Centred Arch. A Newel stair was built at the side of the chimney in place of the early ladder type, originally used for defence reasons. The roof constructed in Oak (cleft) is a full hipped roof of the Tie beam and Collar beam style roof, common in the South East. The walls, originally, constructed of Oak timber framing with Wattle and Daub infilling, have been bricked round in the early 18th century when bricks were more readily available and in fashion. Brickwork is laid in the Flemish Bond, and extends only to the first floor with the original timber framing (as above) covered with hanging tiles. At this time there was also an extension to the rear bringing the line of the roof down to within five feet from the ground level. This type of roof is sometimes called an Outshot or Catslide roof. This addition very often housed small animals - pigs, poultry etc. A MINIMUM STAY OF TWO NIGHTS FOR BANK HOLIDAY WEEKENDS IS REQUIRED. The house stands between two old railways which were used less when the new roud between Petham and Waltham was built in the mid 18th century. These roads are now only public footpaths leading to the church in Waltham and the village itself.

If you enjoy walking, then Chislehurst is on one of the Green Chain Routes from Mottingham Lane to Beckenham Park (4 1/2 miles) The Crown is very close to the well known Chislehurst Caves which extend for nearly 20 miles and date back over 4,000 years. The caves became more widely known after their use during the Second World War as an air raid shelter, not only for the locals but for over 10,000 Londoners who travelled to the caves each night by special train. It was so well organised that people could pay 1d per night for a bunk and there was also a cinema, church and hospital for them to use during their time underground. The caves are thought to be entirely man made and were created during three periods of time by our ancestors - Well worth a visit. The Crown Inn has 7 guest rooms.

The Crown is a Grade 1-listed 15th century building fully-restored to provide delightful bars and high quality accommodation. Over the centuries the inn, which probably started as a coffee-house, has built an unrivalled reputation for warm and friendly hospitality. Locally we are known as The Cherry Brandy House, owing to a secret recipe for cherry brandy brought over by the Huguenots fleeing from the religious persecutions of Louis XIV. This secret recipe is now jealously guarded and bottles of what is almost certainly the most exclusive cherry brandy in the world cannot be bought from anywhere else except The Cherry Brandy House. The Chequers traces its history back to 1137 when it was a manor house. It has been a pub since 1414. When used as a coaching post house there was stabling for 58 horses and it was last used as such in 1913 when the final coach and horses to pass through belonged to Pickford's Removals. The pub was in the Beech family for 100 years. Today, The Chequers is one of Shepherd Neame's Mulberry Inns, our group of traditional pubs with a stylish, relaxed 21st century ambience plus restaurant-standard food and wines complementing our prize-winning ales and lagers. Comfortable bars, a fine restaurant serving excellent meals as well as a selection of tasty bar meals. The Royal Wells Hotel owes it's regal title to Queen Victoria, who made frequent visits as a young princess in the early nineteenth century. The newly refurbished Four Star Dale Hill Hotel is situated high on the Kentish Weald in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Set in over 350 acres of beautiful grounds the hotel has been designed with style and offers both luxury and comfort, with a choice of restaurants and bars offering award winning modern English and French cuisine. Each of the refurbished 35 en suite bedrooms are non smoking and are well appointed, many have magnificent views overlooking the golf courses and surrounding countryside. They all are individually heated and include radio, direct dial telephones, modem access, trouser press, hairdryer, a safe, tea and coffee making facilities together with satellite television. Our guests are free to use our leisure facilities, which include a sauna, gymnasium and swimming pool. Dale Hill has two 18 hole golf courses. Our first course opened in 1973 and is suitable for players of all abilities. We are very proud of its reputation of one of Kent and Sussexs finest courses. The grand opening of our new course took place in September, 1997. Designed to USGA standards by former US Masters champion Ian Woosnam MBE, the course is challenging, even for the more experienced golfer. Additional on site facilities include a covered driving range, two putting greens and a practice area; our Pro Shop offers an extensive range of golfing accessories. The Marine Hotel offers a choice of 25 en-suite bedrooms (16 with sea view), all with modern facilities. It has been completely refurbished without losing its original character and is ideally located for touring Kent's north-east coast. There is a splendid restaurant that offers excellent food and there is a bar and lounge, which also looks out across the sea. If that wasn't enough, the magnificent Galleon Suite is available for functions and wedding receptions and can double as a theatre to supplement the Marine's flexible range of conference and training facilities - a seminar room, complete with audio and visual equipment.
