Rowardennan Hotel
Rowardennan Drymen, Stirling, Scotland, G63 0AR.
It would be difficult to imagine a more beautiful situation for any building. The hotel lies at the foot of Ben Lomond (3,192 feet high) and is beautifully ringed round by woods. It stands practically on the loch which is magnificent in all its moods. It is part of the turbulent history of the district which was the stamping ground of that almost legendary outlaw, Rob Roy MacGregor. It was to the Rowardennan Inn, as it was then known, that Robert, one of Rob Roy's sons, brought a kidnapped heiress and forced her to go through a ceremony of marriage; a ploy which brought him eventually to the gallows in Edinburgh. Earlier, in 1716, residents of the inn must have witnessed the passage of the odd little fleet that came against the MacGregors and retired in triumph after burning a few small boats. In its peaceful capacity, the Inn served as a wayside halt for the wild drovers who brought their equally wild, shaggy cattle across the loch by ferry on their way to the famous markets that were held at Stirling and Falkirk. The ferry, too, still runs in the summer months for the use of pedestrians and cyclists. The Ferry Field, between the hotel and the pier, also commemorates those stirring days.

The Kings House Hotel is a family run accommodation establishment built on the site of a Royal Hunting Lodge of the Stewart Kings and used by King James VI. The original building dates from circa 1571. All the bedrooms are en-suite, furnished in a homely cottage style and two have four poster beds. The hotel dining room features an Adam style fireplace with log fires. Inchrie Castle Inn
The Trossachs Aberfoyle Stirling, Scotland, FK8 3XD.
It was here Highlander, Rob Roy McGregor, forayed in the 17th century and almost 300 years later, in one of the cosy oak beamed rooms of what was then Inchrie Castle Hotel, the 'Second Covenant' to give Scotland its own Parliament was signed by a small group of dedicated and proud Scotsmen. More than 2 million others followed their lead and signed the Covenant. From that day on Inchrie Castle Hotel became known as the Covenanters Inn. The Scottish connection continued when the famous 'Stone of Destiny', over which Scottish Kings and Queens of a bygone era were crowned, was secreted in the Inn when it mysterously disappeared from Westminster, London. A group of modern day Covenanters had removed the Stone to return it to its 'rightful home in Scotland'. Fifty years later the wish of the Covenanters came true when the Scottish Parliament opened in Scotland's capital city of Edinburgh and the Inn reverted to its original name of Inchrie Castle - The Covenanters Inn. Many parts of the original Castle remain, including quaint 'nooks and crannies' and the dungeon, hewn from the rock face under the Castle, where the Stone of Destiny lay hidden.
